Amy AkibaPresidentMajor: Psychological Development & Learning
Minor: Education Studies Favorite Class: Psych 133C: Language Development with Dr. Amber Ankowski or Edu 130: Race, Class, & Education Inequality with Dr. Tyrone Howard Why Psi Chi: As a former president of Psi Beta at my community college, the sister psychology honor society to Psi Chi, I knew I wanted to become more involved with Psi Chi. I found out about the scholarships, grants, awards, research fairs, and the lifelong membership that helps when networking. Beyond membership benefits, I enjoy being a part of a fun and diverse community that explores how we can use psychology in all realms of our lives and in societal solutions. Piece of Advice for Bruins: Remember that you are on your OWN journey! You do not have to figure it all out now, so you do not need to compare yourself with others. There are SO MANY classes, professors, research, and more here at UCLA. Explore as many opportunities available to you! Peek into my Bucket List: Completing the Camino de Santiago |
Jocelyne NguyenVice PresidentMajor: Psychology
Minor: Global Health Favorite Class: PSYCH130: Developmental Psychology with Goff Why Psi Chi: To meet other students interested in psychology and learn about professional opportunities in the field! Piece of Advice for Bruins: Talk to your TAs! On top of their course knowledge, they often have invaluable advice on grad school and may be your ticket to a research position if they work in a lab. For those that deal with social anxiety, know that they're usually way more approachable than professors--remember that they were once in your shoes not too long ago! Hikari UmemoriSecretaryMajor: Psychobiology
Favorite Class: Psychology 100A Why Psi Chi: I chose to join Psi Chi to be in an environment with other psychology department majors. The society offers a lot of insight to a broad range of careers that psychology majors can be involved in and learning about them offers me a clearer path to what I want to be in the future. Piece of Advice for Bruins: Always try new things! You never know what you will like or hate unless you try them! Peek into my Bucket List: Go to Bora Bora |
Megan O'DonnellTreasurerMajor: Pre-Psychobiology
Favorite Class: LS 7C Why Psi Chi: I chose to join Psi Chi because I have loved learning about psychology ever since I took my first psychology class in high school. As a pre-med student, I find so many of the pre-med specific clubs to be so intense and competitive which can be stressful at times and have wanted the opportunity to explore psychology further during my undergraduate experience. Connecting with others who share my interest was my main goal and this organization provides just that in a welcoming and open environment. Piece of Advice for Bruins: Get involved! As a 2nd year who fell victim to the pandemic last year, I found it really hard to meet new people during my first year at UCLA. Joining organizations that are made up of students who share your interests is an easy way to see new faces outside of the classroom, especially when face-to-face interaction isn't always feasible. I love all the events, resources, and information this organization has to offer and I have been able to gain so much throughout my time here. It's also great to be a part of a community with people who have the same interests and who all want you to succeed! Piece of Advice for Bruins: Try out anything and everything you can! Anything that piques your interest such as clubs, workshops, or events, I recommend checking it all out. It's a great way to meet new people, make new friends, build skills, or simply make wonderful memories! You never know what you will find! I am eager to be apart of the process of organizing meaningful club meetings and events that allow students to gain exposure to all the unique fields of Psychology. Piece of Advice for Bruins: Definitely don't be afraid to ask for help! Your peers are among some of the most helpful and supportive people you will ever encounter in your college journey.
